From June 15 to 17, 2026, the fifth working meeting for the revision of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines (hereinafter referred to as the DG) was held in Shanghai. The meeting brought together over 50 scholars from nutrition science, public health, agriculture, and sports. Concentrated on core themes such as global trends in DG development, the core scientific evidence underpinning the DG, Chinese food culture and healthy dietary patterns, and dietary guidance principles for special populations, participants engaged in in-depth discussions, striving to produce an authoritative national dietary guidelines document that integrates scientific rigor, local relevance, and practicality.

Professor Yang Yuexin, President of the Chinese Nutrition Society, gave a warm welcome to all participants, and reported on the major work undertaken since the launch of the new DG revision, including the establishment of 25 evidence review teams, the multiple seminars on domestic and international scientific advances of dietary guidelines, and surveys on the current awareness of the current DG and international progress, all with the aim of completing the new edition revision to the highest quality standards.

The meeting featured rich and focused discussions, with presentations and collective deliberations across multiple thematic sessions. Scholars from the Southeast Asia Public Health Nutrition Network, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Food and Nutrition Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Chinese Nutrition Society, Zhejiang University, Beijing Sport University, and the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China delivered presentations on topics spanning the latest developments in international dietary guidelines revision and comparative experiences across countries, the current nutritional health status and chronic disease trends among Chinese residents, the actual supply and consumption of edible agricultural products in China, optimal scientific recommendations for adult physical activity, and the inheritance of traditional Chinese food culture and the Eastern healthy dietary pattern. The meeting also held focused discussions on the core revision directions and principles of the new edition DG.

The meeting also discussed the revision directions for the core principles of the dietary guidelines for special populations.

Since the release of its first edition in 1989, the Chinese Dietary Guidelines has continuously guided the entire population in establishing scientific dietary behaviors. Today, it stands as an important supporting document aligned with the Healthy China Initiative (2019–2030) and the National Nutrition Plan (2017–2030). The new revision adheres to the working principles of evidence-based science, collective wisdom, and openness and transparency, comprehensively integrating cutting-edge global experiences, the latest domestic and international scientific research data, local food culture, and the actual needs of different population groups.
